Room 5 camp
On the the 14th of November Room 5 students went to camp at Lake Middleton. We stayed there from the 14th to the 16th.
At Lake Middleton we did activities like: swimming, boating and biscuiting, kayaking, boiling the billy, had a camp concert, played T-ball and lots of other things.
Kayas favourite part of the camp was watching Mrs Sweney and Maddy going on the biscuit!
Morgans favourite part was boiling the billy in a different way.
We had tent groups. The names of the tent groups were: The Twizel Ferns, The Four Directions, The Ted Bear Survival Group, The Hillbillies, The Huggies and The Oompaloompas. Some people slept in the cabin and the other people slept in tents.
A big thanks to all the parents helpers and Mr and Mrs Sweney.
Room 5 had a great time!

Cross Country
This is a picture of mostly Room 5 children sitting together waiting for their races.
On Tuesday the 24th Room 5 and other students went down to the Omarama Cross Country. This year it was held at Lady Bird Hill. Ages 5 to 13 took part. The 5 to 10 year olds had to do a shorter course but they had to run it twice. The 11 to 13 year olds had to run all the way to the top of Lady Bird Hill and back. Evrybody looked very tired after their races. Lots of people found it very steep and some people slipped over.Twizel did very well.
This is Nikau running in his race.

Art and PE
Hello we are reporting from the class room known as Room 5.
For the past term we have been doing art. For art we had to make a clay house.
Last term we started doing our clay houses. Most people started their clay houses, but some didn't finish planning theirs so they just painted a picture of their dream house.
This week we are about to varnish our houses.
The steps for making our clay houses were:* Step 1. Start planning your dream house on paper.* Step 2. Make your clay into the right shapes.* Step 3.Attach the pieces together * Step 4.Put the creations in the kiln. Voila... your clay house!
The picture that you are seeing is Tyra's amazing clay house. These are the things that are in Tyra's house: 1.T.V., 2.Bed, 3.Shoes 4.Shelf.
This picture [under Tyra's house] is Morgan kicking the ball.
We did soccer for P.E. on the huge school field. The task was to buddy up with a friend and practise kicking the ball to each other.

This week is Te Reo Lauguage week. The theme of Maori language week is," Arohatia Te Reo". Some of us did Maori posters to put in a competition. We have been singing Maori songs[Waiata]. They are "Pu Kupu Maori,"" Purerehua,"," Nga Tae O Nga Putiputi" and "Aoaraki.E". Mrs Sweney said, "He aha tenei?" [What is this?] Then we had to answer, in a sentence , in Maori!
Every morning we have to say to Mrs Sweney, how we feel in Maori. This one of our answers, " Kei te pai ahau whaea Sweney." Also every morning we have a quiz in Maori. What we have to do is match the English words with the Maori words.
I feel so sorry for the Margaret Mayhe family for what has happened. R.I.P. You were one of the best writers I knew. I loved" A lion in the Meadow".

End of term 2 blog
For technics Amy and Clayton made a campervan 3000. They put 5 people in it. There were 2 adults and 3 children. The top part of the campervan came off and turned into a boat.
Amy and Clayton with their campervan 3000.
Room 5 sang a song at assembly called "The Ballad of Captain Cook". We had been practicing for two weeks. One of the lines was "But I must be off to the isles of the south, to observe the Transit of Venus. We sang this song because the Transit of Venus was going to happen soon. It is about Captain Cook going to Hawaii to observe the Transit of Venus.
This is our last blog for the term. Happy holidays everyone!

war hero homework
Room 5 students were given a task for homework to find out about a war hero. We were given a piece of paper each which told us the name of an animal or person we had to reaserch. Some of of them were ;John Simpson, Anne Frank, Edith Cavell, Simpson's donkey, Caeser the dog and Sir Charles Upham. We had one week to complete this task. Some of the things that we had to find out were, when they were born, when they died, family history, which war they were in, their part in the war[s] and our opinion of them.
On Friday there were lots of creative ways that people had presented their information. Maddison showed her information on a grave that she had made.

Pontoon technics
Yesturday Room 5 students had a task to make a pontoon with the technics. We had to design it so it could carry soldiers from their battle ships to the shore. We had to remember that it was very hot so we needed to add a shelter. We also needed to think about shelter from the Turks bullets. The pontoons had to be able to fit at least 40 to 50 soldiers on it. Some people added paddles so that the soldiers could row themselves to shore. Other people made paddle boats.

ANZAC Poems
ANZAC DAY
Today in Room 5, we wrote some poems about the war in Gallipoli. Here are the poems that two groups composed.
1. Shells! Shells! that's all I hear.
"Gas masks on!" yells the sergeant.
I aim
I fire
I kill,
We call for reinforcments,"Take cover!" There are too many.
2. Knee-deep mud
Poison-gas shells
Endless fire
Explosions!
3. Sitting in my trench
All I can think of is going home,
Longing for peace and my family,
Clean clothes
Warmth
Milk in my tea
And a comfortable bed.
DAWN SERVICE
Dawn Service
The service in the dawn
For all the people who have been drawn
To remember the soldiers,
Fought and died.
The dawn service
An important part
ANZAC Day,
When we put our wreaths to lay.
The flags fly at half-mast
As some say their last
Farewell.
The poppies still grow,
The bag-pipers and buglers blow.
April 25th
A day to think about
The people
Who died and fought in the wars.

GATE challenge
On Wednesday a group of Year Six and Seven students, [including Morgan, Crystal and Corbyn from our class] got together to complete a maths challenge. Our challenge was to figure out the link between Fibonacci, sunflowers and Palazetto Dello sport stadium. We found out that the link between the three was all to do with the Fibonacci sequence. Mr Fibonacci was a mathematician and found out the sequence that he invented normally always occurred in nature. The pattern of a sunflower's inside follows the sequence.
After we had found the link between those three things we had to add two more things onto the list. The two that we added to the list were roses and pinecones. We shared with Room 5 after we had finished.
At two O'clock children from other schools including us shared on a video conference, what we had found out in the challenge.
Pine cone.
Find the similarities betwen these!

In art class our task was to design posters to welcome the Maadi Cup teams to Twizel. There are over one hundred teams entered. Jack designed a poster with some of the teams' singlets on it.
To colour the posters in we used pastels, crayons, coloured pencil and felts. On most of the Room 5 posters there are labels welcoming different school's teams.
M1, M2 and M3 students also made posters. They will all be displayed somewhere around the town square.
The opening ceremony will be in the town square on Sunday 25 March at 2pm.

Bicycles....bicycles
Check out this awesome cycling.
On Monday 12/03/12 Constable Hocking from Timaru came to school to teach us about Safe Cycling . She taught us about what to do on our bikes at T-crossings and about how to wear our helmets correctly. Did you know that stickers should not be stuck onto hemets? Why? ...because the glue on the stickers eats away at the plastic and weakens the helmet.
Our bikes were checked too, before we used them to test our slow-riding skills.

Safe cycling...easy riders.
This is when we had to go as slow as possible and Mellisa timed how long we could stay in the "box" without stopping. Some found it quite challenging.
There were 4 stations and the teams moved clockwise each time the whistle blew.Slow, careful riding was our focus. That was a really fun day.
